G'day Fulton, How do you stay on target with your budget while on the road? A few months ago, we talked about RTW budgeting and ways to save money for traveling. Next up: How to not run out of money before your trip is over.
Money Tips: - You already have a travel budget, and probably know about how much per day you plan to spend in each region, so priority #1: Keep track of your expenses. You don't need to turn into a receipt collector, but keeping a tally of your ATM withdrawals/balance in a notebook, Google Doc, or an app like Mint, will let you get your spending in check before it's too late. A weekly check-in with your budget is a good idea.
- Ask for a discount. If you're under 26, you can get a student travel card that will get you cheaper entry fees at many attractions. Even if you're not a student, you can still negotiate a cheaper price at many hotels and even for activities (or round up a group and ask for a discount). It never hurts to ask.
- Don't be afraid to splurge. That skydive in Taupo is going to put you way over your daily budget, but guess what? You can make up for it with the days you do cheap/free activities like reading, people watching and hiking. You didn't come half way around the world to sit in the hostel and just eat peanut butter toast.
- Consider working while on the road. Hostels often exchange work for rooms, or you could look into something more organized like WWOOFing.
- Know how you're going to access your money before you leave. Make sure your debit or credit card is the best for travelers. Remember, a debit card is great for ATM instant-access to your cash, but a credit card is best to protect your money when paying for things like hotels and activities.
