Watch the Thrown – 2012 ASP World Title Contenders
2011 has come and gone, delivering nothing short of one of the most exciting and talked about seasons the tour has ever witnessed. We saw bombing conditions at Teahupo’o and Pipeline, rippable surf in New York and San Francisco, and landmark swells at Bells and Supertubos. We saw the ascension of Kelly Slater to the annals of sport history with an unprecedented 11th ASP World Title. We saw the announcement of a new guard of challengers and we saw the continued adaptation and high-performance of perennial threats. We saw the preternatural performances of rotation kids. 2012 is now upon us and 2012 is a question mark. Will we see the end of the Slater era? Will the world’s greatest surfer continue to outperform the next generation of talent? And if not, who will challenge for the throne?
2012 ASP World Title Threats:

ASP Midyear Rotation Deactivated for 2012
The ASP Board of Directors has officially decided to deactivate the midyear rotation for the 2012 ASP World Title Race. The motion to discontinue the midyear rotation was initially tabled and supported by the surfer stakeholder group, headed by representative and 2012 Billabong Pipe Master Kieren Perrow. Initially set in motion in 2010 with the field reduction from 45 to 34, the midyear rotation saw some of the sport’s brightest stars join the elite ranks in 2011 at the halfway mark of the season to produce amazing results, but scheduling uncertainties have forced the rotation to be eliminated from next year’s calendar, guaranteeing the ASP Top 34 a full season to challenge for the ASP World Title.

R.I.P. Sean Collins
Surfing is an imperfect science. There are simply too many variables to control and predict. This makes the sport of surfing both one of the most exciting and one of the most frustrating. There is no other playing field in the sporting world with the kind of dynamism that the ocean provides. No two waves alike. Wind, tide, swell, sea life, etc. are just a few of the constantly changing variables that surfers deal with on a daily basis. Sean Collins, lifelong surfer/sailor and founder of Surfline.com, was an instrumental part in the development of the ASP Dream Tour and in developing the best event windows for the world’s best surfers to perform in. Sean passed away last week, but the world is better for having had him in it. This…is is his story…
