G'day Fulton,

How do you fit in everything you want to see in one round the world trip? It can be tough to plan a two week vacation, so while planning your RTW route is obviously loads of fun, it can also be a bit of a challenge. First world problems, my friend.

First up? Jot down a bunch of places you'd love to see on your RTW. Of course this list is going change a lot after you consider your budget and the logistics of traveling to some of the more obscure places. Picking a lot of budget locations is a great way to start your route - think Southeast Asia and Latin America and other places were you can travel on $40 or less per day. My favorite trip planning method always involves a map of some kind, and sometimes it includes wasting a few hours with our Round the World Trip Planner!

Round the World trip

  • Are seasons important to consider? Whether you want an endless summer by chasing beach season around the world, or you're after a mix of warm and cold, seasonality is a big part of planning a trip. Along with the weather and packing considerations, there's also regional tourist season to consider. So do your research!
  • Which direction should I go in? If you've spent any time on the RTW message boards, you've likely seen this one come up a few times. Some travelers like to save their most expensive regions for last, depending on their budget.
  • Is it possible to over-plan? Yes. You'll never be able to plan for all the possibilities and you will likely change your mind along the way. But having a tentative plan for your route and budget is always a good idea.
  • Will I need visas? Having a plan... here's one you should have a plan about. You should know ahead of time if the countries you plan to visit require visas, when/where you can get them, and timelines. The last thing you want is to be stranded somewhere waiting for a visa, or be waiting for your passport to come back to you in the mail so you can move on.

  • How do you plan your trips?
