De Souza Injures Knee in Maldives
Adriano de Souza, current ASP World No. 1, has been a busy man during the mid-season break. An extended stay in Northern Sumatra bore witness to some powerful surfing from the young natural-footer, but a secondary trip to the Maldives has put the Brazilian’s ASP World Title hopes in Jeopardy. De Souza sustained an injury to his right knee and immediately flew home to get a professional opinion on the damage of the injury. The good news from the initial diagnosis is that de Souza could be back up and at ‘em in up to 10 days, the bad news is it that the injury could possibly sideline de Souza for up to two months.

Jordy Smith Talks on STAB Mag
Jordy Smith, current ASP World No. 5, has been uncharacteristically quiet thus far this season. The 2010 ASP World Runner-Up cruised to back-to-back Equal 3rd place finishes in the opening two events, before stumbling with a 13th in Rio. Aside from that, it’s been all quiet on the South African front – no Primes, minimal website updates (lately anyway). However, that’s all projected to change in the near future. Reports are coming in that the powerful South African has been breaking high-performance boundaries at Pasta Point in the Maldives this past week, and with the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay looming in a couple of weeks, all eyes will be on Jordy to defend his homegrown title. STAB Magazine has put together an in-depth interview with the big man, covering everything from stabbings to McDonalds to girlfriends, Dane, performances, etc.

Fiery young Brazilian Gabriel Medina has been absolutely lethal in ASP PRIME events this year. At only 17 years of age the ultra-consistent Brazilian is sitting at No. 18 on the ASP World Rankings and is in excellent position to join the elite ranks at the midyear cutoff, where Medina will face off against talent twice his age. After his recent back-to-back performances including at victory at the SuperSurf Internacional and a 2nd at the Quiksilver Pro Portugal, Medina is emerging as a leader of his generation and the ASP briefly caught up with the promising talent to see where his inspiration comes from.

Slater, Gudangs, Dane and Taj Assault Lowers
The Pacific Ocean was lit up this past week with a barrage of swells out of the Southern Hemisphere, and with several of the ASP Top 34 posting up in Southern California for the mid-season break, it was only a matter of time before the elements combined to bring us a Lowers mega session. Last Sunday and Monday, the likes of Kelly Slater, Patrick Gudauskas, Freddy Patacchia, Taj Burrow, and a freshly-rehabilitated Dane Reynolds, amongst others tore apart a consistent fetch of swell at the iconic Lower Trestles and Surfline was there to capture all the hi-fi ripping.
