G'day Fulton, Many dream of traveling the world but dismiss it as impossible. For those of us planning a trip, we know it's possible, but are still a little nervous about how much our trip is really going to cost us. If you followed Rolf Pott's 6 week No Baggage Challenge, you know how important it is to get an RTW ticket that includes the major portion of your planned destinations. So pick out some destinations and then do the research to estimate how much you'll need in London vs Bangkok, or Singapore vs Cairo. So once you have your ticket picked out, what else will you spend you money on?: - RTW Ticket: This month's special tickets start at $1399 (plus taxes)
- Other Transport: once you're on the ground, you'll need to budget for taxis, buses, metro, rental car, regional flights etc. Getting from the airport to your destination is an unavoidable cost, but once you get in town, try to save money by taking public transit and walking as much as possible.
- Lodging: Where you stay is probably the most variable part of your budget. Depending on your travel style and the country you're in, you could spend $0 (by couchsurfing etc), $20 at a hostel in Australia or several hundred a night at a hotel. If you're staying in one location for a while, consider a vacation rental.
- Food: Just like lodging, you can go budget or go all out. If you're a budget foodie, try to save on breakfasts and lunches by checking out the local supermarket & street food, and splurging on exciting meals as you can afford it. And remember, drinking every night can ruin your food budget quick! Tip: save on alcohol at grocery stores and duty free shopping.
- Entertainment: There's no reason to go half way around the world and then not experience anything. Sure, save by skipping a museum if you'll just be "checking it off" your travel list, but don't skip the things that are important to you just to save a few dollars.
